China views Taiwan as a renegade province, and has waged a successful campaign to crimp the Island’s independence, by getting it frozen out of world institutions.

According to Taiwan’s Central News Agency, Rosemary Ho told a meeting of government officials at Taiwan’s presidential office that the country’s industrial and commercial success had not been matched in the global political and cultural arenas. She said the country should build its international profile on the back of its commercial success.

At the same time, said Ho, Taiwan could not afford to ignore the commercial potential of mainland China. She said the Taiwanese authorities should develop the state as a regional trans-shipment hub, pushing for direct links across the Taiwan Strait.

This should be worked towards regardless of Taiwan’s political disputes with the mainland, said Ho, as without a thriving economy, the country’s political efforts would lead nowhere.
