Worldwide high performance computing (HPC) technical server market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR)of 7.3% in next five-year to reach revenues of $14bn by 2016, according to IDC.
According to the report Worldwide High-Performance Technical Server Qview, the factory revenue for HPC technical server market during the second quarter of 2012 has slightly decreased by 0.9% to $2.4bn compared to $2.5bn in the same period of 2011.
During the first half of 2012, the HPC technical server market declined by 1% while in terms of shipments it decline 11% in units when compared to the same period in 2011.
As average selling prices of HPC continued to grow during the period, though the unit shipments declined 21% to 22,998 compared to the second quarter of 2011 and 20% over the fourth quarter of 2011.
The revenue in the high-end Supercomputers segment for HPC systems increased by 21.8% over first quarter of 2012 to reach $1.17bn, while the revenue from Workgroup HPC systems decreased by 13.9% from the first quarter of 2012, and declined by 20.3% year over year.
The high-end Supercomputers segment accounted for 48.6% of worldwide HPC technical server revenue in the second quarter of 2012, while the Divisional segment captured 13.4% of revenue, the Departmental segment made up 27.5% of revenue and the Workgroup segment contributed 10.6%.
Among the vendors IBM topped with a revenue share of 32.7% while HP had a share of 29.8% and Dell accounted 14.2% of global revenue share.
Cray has recorded a 43.7% increase in its year-over year revenue during the second quarter of 2012, while Fujitsu recorded a growth of 33.5% and SGI registered 10.3% growth.
