HP updates ProLiant line with AMD Opteron 6100 processors

Promises performance boost and enhanced power savings

HP has introduced three HP ProLiant G7 server platforms, which it claims to offer performance boost and enhanced power savings over previous generations.

Delivering a 23:1 consolidation ratio, the new line with AMD Opteron 6100 series processors include HP ProLiant DL165 G7 and ProLiant DL385 G7 rack-optimised servers, as well as ProLiant SL165z G7 scale-out ‘skinless’ server.

HP said that the ProLiant servers are part of the its converged infrastructure portfolio that integrates servers, storage, network devices and facility resources into a common environment, allowing IT to respond to business demands. The new servers provide modular, standards-based building blocks that advance clients toward a converged infrastructure.

The new ProLiant servers include HP Thermal Logic technologies to reduce power consumption by as much as 96%; HP dynamic power capping technology in HP insight control that enhances data centre utilisation and reclaims overprovisioned energy; and HP power advisor to help clients enhance energy efficiency, the company said.

According to HP, the ProLiant platform offers a set of embedded technologies and tools to maximise the productivity of an IT infrastructure, including HP insight control software to improve management productivity while reducing operational expenses; integrated lights-out to simplify server management; and insight remote support software that reduces issue resolution time by 20% with secure remote support for HP servers and storage.

The new HP ProLiant DL165, DL385 and SL165z G7 platforms are expected to be available in April, 2010. Prices for HP ProLiant G7 servers start at $1,449 and vary based on specific configurations.
