Palo Alto, California-based HP has teamed up with Turbolinux, a division of Tokyo, Japan-based software house Software Research Associates Inc, to develop and support the Linux PC, which will be available in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

HP’s offering of Turbolinux in Asia demonstrates our commitment to serving our customers’ needs around the globe, said Tad Bodeman, director of software product marketing at HP’s personal systems group.

The HP Compaq Business Desktop PCs will run Turbolinux 10 Desktop operating system, which is based on the new Linux 2.6 kernel, as well as the OpenOffice.org 1.1 office productivity software suite. As part of the agreement, Turbolinux will provide technical support to HP’s engineers to resolve support issues.

The adoption of Linux on the desktop across Asia is booming, said Koichi Yano, president and COO of Turbolinux. We’re pleased to partner with HP to give customers an integrated desktop solution tailored to meet business requirements in many different markets.

HP has previously offered MandrakeSoft SA’s Mandrake Linux on its HP Compaq Business Desktops in the US, and last week introduced the new HP Compaq 2000 and 5000 series PCs running either Microsoft Windows or Mandrake Linux.
