Hewlett-Packard Co also says that its single-chip serializer/deserializer (SerDes) transceiver chips for Gigabit Ethernet LAN products with link lengths of up to 2km are now shipping. HP has been sampling the SerDes chips since October 1996, to major networking companies as well as several Gigabit Ethernet startup companies, its says. Adding that these include Extreme Networks, Rapid City Communications, GigaLabs and Essential Communications. The transceiver chip is priced at $17 in 10,000-piece quantities, with production quantities available in June.
