Hewlett-Packard Co says that International Data Corp shipment figures for Unix servers during the first and second quarters of this year show it retained its top spot in high-end servers (CI No 3,466). HP, which recently sold its 1,000th Enterprise V-Class server, claims to have sold twice as many V-Class systems in the last nine months as its closest competitor – Sun Microsystems Inc – has sold comparable systems over the last 18 months. Sun, which entered this market last year following its acquisition of Cray’s Starfire business in 1996, has now usurped Sequent Computer Systems, which slips to third place. Aside from V-Class systems, HP has sold over 5,000 of its lower-end T-Class machines. In IDC’s definition, high-end systems are priced at over $1m.
