HP, which has been backing the Sony/Phillips-led Blu-ray specification, said it has formally appealed to the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) to include two technologies from the rival HD-DVD specification.

The move reflects HP’s desire to ensure that customers are not forced to choose between competing HD formats for DVDs, the company said in a statement.

The two technologies in question, Managed Copy and iHD, were cited as reasons why Intel Corp and Microsoft Corp threw their weight behind HD-DVD three weeks ago, diluting the impression that Blu-ray would emerge as the winning standard.

Managed Copy is a feature that mandates users will be able to make at least one copy of copyrighted DVDs they buy. iHD is an interactivity option that, according to HP, enhanced navigation.
