We suppose Software AG is going to get money out of Hewlett- Packard Co for an HP-UX version of Microsoft Corp’s Distributed COM now that it’s clear HP isn’t doing the work itself. HP said it would have a DCOM implementation available for its Unix by the middle of 1998 (CI No 3,154), although it’s keeping its mouth shut tight on further details for the moment. That’s probably because of the consternation caused internally by an announcement made by HP’s workstation group last summer suggesting the company would be doing a DCOM-on-HP-UX port of its own. Insiders say HP’s general system unit, which should have been the proper source for any DCOM announcement, was incensed. HP told us we are supportive of having COM/DCOM available on our platform and we encourage third party efforts to make it available on HP-UX, which is expected to be available in the first half of calendar 1998. Software AG says it’s starting with a 32-bit version of DCOM for HP-UX which is due by mid-year, but is already working with HP on preparation for a 64-bit iteration. More DCOM news this section
