Targeted at customers running data-intensive business applications such as databases, business intelligence, enterprise resource planning, and large mail and messaging platforms in virtualized environments, the systems have a power supply upgraded for 80% efficiency. The workstations, which are 90% recyclable, will be available in shapes optimized for desk-side, desktop or the rack-mount version.

Expected to begin shipping in mid-December, the workstations have a starting price of approximately $1,200.

HP’s announcement came just a day after Lenovo unveiled its D10 and S10 ThinkStations with quad core processors. The ThinkStations are the first product from Lenovo since the company acquired the brand from IBM two years ago and will be priced from $1,199. Dell also announced in October 2007 the availability of its Precision T3400 workstation for over $1,000.
