Hewlett-Packard Co is generating a deal of interest with its PA-7100LC Hummingbird RISC – see page three inside – because of the multimedia features that come integrated on-chip with the microprocessor core, and enable it to be used to create low-cost computers for a variety of commercial and technical multimedia applications; partner Hitachi Ltd also announced the PA/50 low-power line, designed for use in entry-level workstations and high-end embedded controllers, and Oki Electric Industrial Co Ltd announced the OP32 embedded controller family of chips designed to be used in printers, facsimile machines and X terminals, and in telecommunications and automotive industries; and Winbond Electronics Corp announced the W89K, an Intel Corp 80486-like pin-similar Precision Architecture RISC for embedded-control products.
