It has since made up its mind and the EV79 is no more. Moreover, the future HP-UX 11i v3 implementation of HP’s Unix, which is supposed to have increased affinity with the AlphaServer’s Tru64 Unix and TruCluster clustering software, has been pushed out 12 months or more and will now be delivered sometime in the second half of 2005.

Hewlett Packard (HP) explained the decision by admitting the EV79 will not meet its performance expectations and it would come out much later than a tweaked EV7 processor. Instead it will be replaced by the EV7z.

It will be much harder for HP when it comes to talking about how HP-UX 11i v3 has slipped behind schedule. It gives IBM [IBM], Dell [DELL] a chance to sell these customers their own offerings.

With HP-UX 11i v3, HP will bring the TruCluster clustering and Advanced File System (AdvFS) from Tru64 over to HP-UX. Getting this into production is more problematic than anticipated. Another difficult thing to do is port the virtual partitioning (vPar) technology of the PA-RISC machines over to the Itanium 2 architecture. This HP-UX delay affects both AlphaServer and PA-RISC customers, therefore.

In addition, AIX 5L 5.3 and Solaris 10, which are now both due next year, are also behind schedule. What independent software vendors think about the delay, and how it affects their porting plans, is also a big concern for HP.
