Hewlett-Packard Co says the unseating of its storage reseller deal with EMC Corp in favor of the OEMed Hitachi Data Systems Ltd arrays was no Pearl Harbor attack on its former partner. EMC did not want to relinquish its brand and HP wanted to put its sticker on the storage it sells. The writing was clearly on the wall long ago, HP says. HP’s plan was pure George Patton, who won the Battle of the Bulge by retaliating first. HP says sales of the HDS arrays – which it has been forced by a court to rename XP256, from the E MC256 moniker it had attached to them – are already ahead of expectations in the first few weeks of sales.
