Hewlett-Packard Co says it has captured the number one position in the Windows NT-based PC workstation market in revenue, units and growth for both the fourth-quarter of 1997 and the year in total. HP is basing its claim on figures produced by market research firm Dataquest. HP is also boasting that the research proves it’s well-positioned to overtake Sun Microsystems Inc this quarter as the leader in the combined Unix and NT workstation market. The Dataquest numbers show that HP shipped 154,000 workstations in 1997, achieved 42% market share and saw unit shipment growth of 156%. Total revenues from the shipments reached $777m, representing 35% market share and 192% growth. HP edged out Compaq Computer Corp for the top spot in NT workstations for three out of four quarters in 1997, according to the report. HP credits the solid performance partly to strong initial sales of its Kayak workstation family, introduced in September.
