HP launches new point-of-sale and kiosk offerings

To help retailers engage with customers and enhance the shopping experience

By CBR Staff Writer

HP has launched new technology offerings — the rp5800 retail system and self-service kiosks, which help retailers engage with their customers and enhance the shopping experience at every customer touch point.

The rp5800 retail system is a point-of-sale (POS) offering. It combines processing and functionality to meet the needs of the demanding retail environments, while the self-service kiosks, featuring Virtual Sales Assistant software, provide customers with an easy-to-use, interactive platform that offers information and personal assistance via 23- or 42-inch diagonal high-definition (HD) touchscreens, said the company.

The rp5800 retail system has advanced POS performance, manageability and security features that enable retailers to standardise on one system throughout their stores. Second-generation Intel Core processors with Intel vPro technology provide a stable and reliable IT infrastructure, the company added.

In addition, the offering also enables enhanced manageability and control for retailers through compliance with manageability standards, including Intel AMT (Intel vPro), DASH, WMI and DMTF, and support for Microsoft Windows 7 Professional, Microsoft Windows POSReady 2009 and Microsoft Windows XP operating systems.

The kiosks are interactive self-service offerings that engage customers with a 23-inch diagonal, 16:9 LED-backlit BrightView display or an immersive 42-inch diagonal, 1920×1080 HD touchscreen housed within a secure lockable steel enclosure.

Retailers can place the kiosks in any customer-facing environment to run in-store promotions, provide directions or share news and product information, said the company.

The self-service kiosks use Microsoft Windows 7 Professional operating systems and integrated Virtual Sales Assistant software, which includes a setup wizard that enables retailers to personalise a variety of pre-developed user interfaces, upload custom assets, manage content remotely and assign locations and playlists.

The self-service kiosks are available in three configurations: wall and shelving mount; pro; and elite.

Each model can be customised with additional optional accessories such as HP Digital Signage Displays, Thermal Receipt Printer, HP Imaging Barcode Scanner and HP Mini Magnetic Stripe Reader.

The company said that rp5800 retail system is expected to be available in early this summer from HP resellers, and the self-service kiosks are expected to be available beginning 23 May 2011 in the US, Canada and Latin America.
