How Sony plans to connect the Internet of Things market

The electronics firm joins the AllSeen Alliance.

By Amy-Jo Crowley

Sony is the latest member to join the AllSeen Alliance consortium in an effort to develop a specification that would enable billions of devices to connect with each other.

The Japanese electronics giant is joining the open source group as a premier member alongside big names like LG, Sharp, Panasonic and Cisco.

Led by the Linux Foundation and Qualcomm, the alliance was set up last December and now includes over 60 members in total.

The group is working on an Internet of Things (IoT) standard based on Qualcomm’s AllJoyn opensource code, which members canuse in their products for free.

Hideyuki Furumi, Sony’s president of UX, product strategy, said: "Developing and progressing the Internet of Everything ecosystem is essential for us to broaden and enrich our customers’ everyday experiences.

"And this is an area where we at Sony are focused on delivering satisfying and exciting experiences to our customers.

"The biggest challenge is connecting everything seamlessly, and we believe that by joining the AllSeen Alliance with which we share the same philosophy, we can strive to deliver these experiences together."
