The mass uptake of Google Glass could potentially be threatened by the ultra-futuristic look of the tech glasses.
But Google Glass lead designer Isabelle Olsson may have come up with a solution in making Google Glass into ‘Google Glasses’.
She spoke to Fast Company about how the latest frames to screw into the Glass hardware can make the gadget look more fashion forward.
The Google Glass hardware fits nearly seamlessly onto the titanium black attachment, which costs $225, so at a glance the gadget looks just like an everyday pair of glasses.
"It’s extremely hard to design a few styles that work for a lot of people," Olsson said, referring to the four available designs: Curve, Thin, Split and Bold.
Echoing Google’s own ethos of simplicity, the minimalist designs are a nod towards the eight shapes that eyewear generally come in, meaning there is something to suit everybody.
"We took some of those but then infused our sense of minimalism and lightness–which is part of our DNA–and simplified them into these iconic styles," said Olsson.
"There’s so many things that are overwhelming about our lives, especially technology. I think it’s our duty to simplify things, not to overwhelm people, not to add things, not to complicate things."
This screw on frame solution also opens the door for those who wear prescription lenses in their glasses who may have otherwise not been able to wear Google Glass.
