Telecoms firm Ericsson is looking to make the shipping industry more efficient after introducing a Maritime ICT Cloud service at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The Maritime ICT Cloud is designed to combine a managed cloud platform with industry applications, using real-time information on traffic, port, weather and safety rather than manually updated data.
The Swedish firm said the information will be shared across a network and will enable ship captains to save time, fuel and money while also limiting environmental damage.
Orvar Hurtig, head of Industry & Society at Ericsson, said: "Vessels at sea do have systems in place that allow them to monitor critical functions and fuel usage, set and maintain an optimal course and ensure the welfare of their crew, but they are not particularly well integrated with fleet management systems onshore and they do not maximise the potential of real-time data."
Other services will include fleet management, engine and fuel monitoring, route optimisation and navigation, as well as crew communications, training and entertainment.
Ericsson says it will be highlighting Maritime ICT Cloud at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), currently taking place in Las Vegas.
