The remote working system will also stand as a strategic platform for RiO, a web-based clinical system that allows community healthcare professionals to access business critical data, such as patient records, on the road.

Opting for a thin-client SSL VPN with two-factor authentication, Scalable Networks said that security and ease of management were key factors in the design and implementation of Hounslow Primary Care Trust’s (PCT) remote access system.

Simon Brown, director of Scalable Networks, commented, With many PCTs deploying on-the-road applications such as RiO, the platform upon which you build a remote working architecture needs to be secure, agile and easy to use – from an IT and end-user perspective. The ability to access emails, patient records, x-rays or medical notes on the move can facilitate commercial rewards, but it’s important to recognize this as a long-term strategy and not a knee-jerk reaction to boardroom demands.

Available to all of the Trust’s 700 employees, Hounslow PCT is anticipating significant improvements in patient care, diagnoses and treatment.
