Honor pushes Huawei to third on mobile leaderboard

The Chinese vendor managed to shift 3 million Honor devices outside its homeland.

Shipments of Huawei‘s Honor smartphones topped 20 million devices in the first six months of 2015, producing $2.63 billion in sales revenue.

In total, Huawei saw shipment of Huawei smartphones rise 39 percent to reach 48.2 million devices.

Validating Huawei’s strategy of pushing the Honor device outside of China, overseas shipments of the devices made up 3 million of the 20 million sold.

The news comes as research from Strategy Analytics reveals that Huawei become the third largest mobile phone vendor in the world in Q2 2015.

Samsung saw its share of the market fall from 22.3 percent to 20.5 percent, while Apple’s rose from 8.2 percent to 10.9 percent. Huawei’s, meanwhile, rose from 4.8 percent to 7.0 percent.

"What we are seeing is that it is getting increasingly difficult for players in the Android market," comments Roberta Cozza, Research Director at Gartner. "There are a certain number of players that are unable to compete with…Samsung on the one hand and Chinese vendors on the other hand.

"Android will continue to be dominant; however, I think that we will see consolidation and disruption coming from new brands.

"Some of these will be Chinese. They are strong in China but it remains to be seen how they will face the challenge of competing outside of China.

"Even outside China some of the Chinese players are the ones that are winning but winning with low cost and mid-range."

"I think that Huawei seems to be doing well," she adds. "They still have a lot to do in creating a brand and creating something for Android that is unique to Huawei. [It is] the Chinese brand with the most potential globally.

"It might be that there are brands that are successful on a country basis, which can address local needs, not a regional one."
