Commenting on its figures for the year to March 31 (see Company Results), Hong Kong Telecommunications Ltd, majority-owned by Cable & Wireless Plc, says that the rapidly-growing links between the Crown Colony and China resulted in telephone traffic to China rising by 35% during the year, and now accounts for more than 40% of total international traffic. The company expects the rate of growth to continue. Underlining the healthy state of the economy in Hong Kong despite so many major economies being in recession, turnover in local phone services rose 15% as demand for business services increased, and the number of new homes in the territory resulted in growth in residential lines.
