In a bizarre move given the self-impact it is suffering from the the cheaper VAX 6000 multiprocessors on sales of its flagship VAX 9000 (CI No 1,664), Digital Equipment Corp has cut prices on its mid-range VAXes in the US by 18% to 69%. The cost of the VAX 6000 Model 500 falls up to 37% and VAX 6000 upgrade prices are reduced up to 69%. The VAX 6000 Model 520 system now costs $261,000, a 34% cut since October. To upgrade the VAX 6000 Model 520 now costs $100,000, off 46%. The cuts are seen as DEC’s response to IBM’s new, cheaper models in the AS/400 family.
