Hitachi Data Systems Inc has been showing off its own versions of IBM Corp’s G5 S/390 CMOS mainframe engine which it calls the Pilot Series P8. It’s offering 18 models including three-high end turbo models, which are identical to IBM’s own boxes. The G5s put IBM’s CMOS engine – and Hitachi’s Pilot series – on par with Hitachi’s own, and very successful bi-CMOS Skyline series, putting the heat on the Japanese company to either get moving with Skyline2 bipolar processors – which could have as muc h as 225 to 250 MIPS of power – or concede defeat and get moving on its attempt to peddle Pilots.
