HITACHI TO MOVE MONOCHROME FLAT PANELS TO TAIWAN

By CBR Staff Writer

Hitachi Ltd announced yesterday that it is to end the manufacture of monochrome liquid crystal diode displays in Japan and shift production to its subsidiary in Taiwan. The wholly-owned Kaohsiung Hitachi Electronics Co Ltd will begin output of large monochrome displays in July or August of 1994 with new investment estimated at about $18 to $27m. The Taiwan unit already produces small- and mid-size monochrome flat panel displays, with sales worth some $65m a year. The Hitachi plant in Mobara, Chiba prefecture, making 50,000 full-size mono displays at a rate of 50,000 a month, will switch to colour ones.
