Hitachi Ltd intends to add the manufacture of high-speed networking devices to its US activities, putting Synchronous Optical Network equipment and Asynchronous Transfer Mode switching systems into its plant in Atlanta, Georgia, where it currently makes telephone exchange systems. Hitachi looks for sales of communications devices to reach $500m by 1998, and expects the expansion to lead to an increase in its Atlanta workforce to between 300 and 400 from the present 130.
