HITACHI TO CONVERT SUPERCOMPUTER SOFTWARE FOR ITS MACHINES IN US

By CBR Staff Writer

Pushing on with its plans to sell more hardware in the US by having more software available for its large machines, Hitachi Ltd is to set up an organisation in the US for converting supercomputer software for its machines: the new Hitachi Computer Products/Marketing & Systems Division will be at its US Computer Support Center in Santa Clara, California and will address the fact that there are presently only 120 applications available for its suprecomputers, compared with 500 for Cray Research Inc machines and about 260 for those from Fujitsu Ltd; in 1987, Fujitsu had 49.5% of the Japanese super-computer market, while Hitachi had just 20%; in an effort to increase its market share, Hitachi established a Supercomputer Expansion Group last year.
