HITACHI SKYLINE SALES SOAR, TAKING MARKET SHARE FROM IBM 390

By CBR Staff Writer

Last year’s sales of Hitachi Ltd’s IBM-compatible mainframe Skyline have rocketed, taking market share away from IBM Corp’s System 390, according to International Data Corp. Hitachi vendors – Ing C Olivetti & Co SpA, Comparex Informationssysteme SpA and Hitachi Data Systems Corp – garnered up to 20% of the market last year, up from 11% in 1995, compared to IBM’s 80.5% share of the market in 1995, which shrank back to 74% last year. Amdahl Corp did not fare well, with its 8.5% share of the market in 1995, dropping away to 6% last year – the System 390 market grew by one percent in terms of revenue.
