In what would be a blow to high-flying Acer Inc, Hitachi Ltd announced yesterday that it was considering cutting imports of personal computers and motherboards from Taiwan. We are currently considering assembling some models in Japan instead of importing them from Taiwan on an OEM basis, Hitachi said. The company presently imports as many as half its personal computers from Taiwan. The company cites a desire to get an edge by responding to customers earlier – the current model is to build machines virtually to order, which is difficult if they are coming in from overseas, and the weaker yen is also a factor, it says.
