Hitachi Maxell Ltd says it will soon stop producing add-on memory boards for personal computers, saying the plummeting of memory chip prices had made it uneconomic so sales will be end by the end of March. It will, however, continue making and selling memory cards for cellular phones and computers; it had projected more than $45m in sales of memory boards for the current fiscal year, but sales are now expected to reach only $18.4m. The company said that staff currently engaged in producing extended memory boards will shift to expanding output of memory cards, for which demand is expected to grow rapidly.
