Hitachi Ltd’s disk media affiliate Hitachi Maxell has developed a 3.5 floppy disk drive capable of storing a daunting 12.5Mb on one of the 3.5 hard shell disks. NEC Corp is to adopt the drive, called the PC-FD810-1 as an external storage unit for its personal computers, and Maxell has an OEM contract to start shipping the things to NEC starting in a week or so. The previous leader in the high capacity 3.5 floppy stakes was Toshiba Corp with its 4Mb drive. NEC is talking in terms of doing 15,000 of the new drives in the first year of marketing.
