HITACHI LTD ANNOUNCES SYSTEM 5000 SERIES

Hitachi Ltd has announced a high performance Optical Character Recognition system, the System 5000 series, which implements a document reading function of 270 pages per minute and a page reading function of 60 pages per minute: the new system is designed as a successor machine to the Hitac T-550/47,27 series, the latest in a line that has so far achieved sales of 20,000 units; Hitachi expects demand for OCR readers to grow at a rate of 10% to 20% annually and the new ones are priced at $43,800 for the model 5050 and $51,500 for the model 5070; it looks to sell 3,000 of the new systems over three years.
