Hitachi has a new line-up of disk drives intended for use with its Hitac M series of mainframes. The H-6588/9 uses magneto-resistive heads and provides 272Gb of capacity per drive. Hitachi says that the new series of drives is designed to cater for a new diversity of needs for disk storage in the client-server computer age, particularly for 24-hour fault-tolerant operation. Hitachi also released a new product that enables the connection of multiple magnetic tape library devices and the transfer of cartridges between them – the Cartridge Transfer Port. Up to 100,000 magnetic tapes can now be stored in the one library device.
