Hitachi Europe Ltd has announced the 1,067Mb DK815-10 8.8 disk drive, which it claims is the first drive smaller than 14 to break the 1Gb capacity barrier: it uses linear voice-coil actuator and thin film heads to achieve a 15mS access time and data transfer rate of 2.4 Mbytes per second; the nine-platter Enhanced SMD drive with 15 heads fits into a 10 by 8.5 by 21.6 housing, and will be available in March at $13,500 in OEM quantities.
