Hitachi Data Systems Ltd, Santa Clara, California, has enhanced its Osiris mainframe open systems environment, adding Hitachi EpochServ-M – adapted from the Epoch Inc hierarchical storage management and back-up system – Hitachi Veritas Volume Manager to manage very large file systems, and Visual Administrator. A new release 1.1 of the HI-OSF/1-M Unix operating system includes a range of additional reliability, availability and serviceability features plus further Unix System V.4 functionality. New also is the availability of Oracle7 on Osiris, OpenVision’s OpenV*Event Manager and Software Clearing House Inc’s Reelmanager for tape management. Further database and network management enhancements are due as is transaction processing software. Launched a year ago (CI No 2,144), the Osiris system consists of an IBM-compatible mainframe running OSF/1 Unix with a Sun Microsystems Inc Sparc-based machine as the front-end processor, fitted with suitable direct channel-attach and Ethernet boards. HI-OSF/1-M runs stand-alone, under VM or in a partition alongside MVS on the Hitachi machines. The Sparc-based Network Co-Processor costs between $160,000 and $180,000; HI-OSF/1-M pricing is based on IBM’s licence group methodology and costs between $2,800 and $25,000. There is no charge to existing customers to upgrade to Release 1.1 of HI-OSF/1-M. Prices for the Hitachi EpochServ-M and Veritas Volume Manager products are partition-based, depending on the system resources allocated to the Osiris environment. Prices for Oracle7, OpenV*Event Manager, and Reelmanager products are available from the developers.
