Hitachi Ltd and Intel Corp have announced that they will be working together to develop a PC system for receiving digital terrestrial TV signals according to Japanese newspaper reports. The move follows Intel’s launch of its Open Digital Broadcast Initiative in December, a bid to develop set-top boxes and receiving equipment that comply with the 18 key technical standards for digital delivery suggested by the Advanced Television Systems Committee (CI No 3,306). A report in the Japanese paper Nihon Keizai Shimbun suggests the technology will be largely based on Hitachi’s decoding system, which complies with all currently used protocols for digital terrestrial broadcasts. According to the paper the companies want the move to help pave the way for developing a standard for digital broadcasting.
