Turns out that both Hitachi Ltd’s new top-end scientific supercomputers, the Hitac S-820 Models 80 and 60, (CI No 716) are uniprocessors, with a claimed performance of 3 GFLOPS, compared with 1.9GFLOPS for the Cray 2: the processor uses multiple parallel pipelines, a fast vector processor with 2.5nS access time, and fast static RAM memory; first ships are set for January and the 80 is from $550,000 a month.
