Highland Software Inc, Palo Alto, California, is launching a collection of compact disks loaded with copies of new Unix applications from independent software vendors. The idea is that users browse through demonstrations of the various packages, and if they like any, can phone the application developer for a password which releases a fully working copy of the application from the disk for evaluation. First editions of the Software Store CD, which come with up to 550Mb of data, are loaded with 100 applications from around 50 software houses, and go out later this quarter for Sun Microsystems Inc, DEC and Hewlett-Packard Co workstations, supporting Open Look and OSF/Motif.
