HIGH-END SERVERS, PROCESSOR BOARDS AND SOFTWARE NEW FROM COMPAQ

By CBR Staff Writer

As one might expect at its biennial love-in, Compaq Computer Corp unveiled a raft of products in the server market, as well as some software. The ProLiant 4500 and ProLiant 4500 NT/Array Model, which comes with SmartStart integration of Microsoft BackOffice, join the company’s mid-range server offerings, as does the ProLiant 1500 5/133 server which features a Flex/SMP Dual Processor Board. The company also launched three processor board options: the 5/133 ProLiant System Processor Upgrade Board for the existing ProLiant 2000, 4000 and 4500 servers; the 5/133 Flex/SMP Dual Processor Board for the ProLiant 1500; and 5/120 ProSignia Processor Upgrade Board for the ProSignia 300 and 500 models. The ProLiant 4500, with Microsoft SQL Server 6.0 running on Windows NT, has been rated at 2,454 tpmC fitted with four 133MHz Pentiums, simulating support of 2,500 simultaneous users. Its price-performance of $242 per tpmC, Compaq said, is nearly half that of other mid-range systems such as Hewlett-Packard Co’s HP 9000 K400 – 2616 tpmC, $550 per tpmC – and Digital Equipment Corp’s AlphaServer 4/275 – 1709 tpmC, $555 per tpmC. Prices start at about $13,000. The ProLiant 4500 5/133 NT/Array Model ships with Microsoft BackOffice 1.5, which includes SQL Server 6.0, SNA Server 2.11, Systems Management Server 1.1 and Mail Server 3.5. It will, however, only be available in North America and Europe. Prices start at about $15,600. At the lower end of the server announcements, the ProLiant 1500 5/133, aimed at the departmental server environment, is said to outperform Hewlett-Packard’s NetServer LH by 37%, IBM Corp’s PC Server 320 by 46% and the Digital Equipment Corp’s Prioris HX by 62%. It’s out now, at prices from $7,200. As for the processor options, the Flex/SMP 5/133 Dual Processor Board for the ProLiant 1500 offers a single 133MHz Pentium processor, an open socket for a second processor, a 512Kb write-back cache and 32Mb of Error Correction Code memory expandable to 256Mb. A 133MHz Pentium System Processor Board upgrade is also available for the ProLiant 4500 5/100. An upgrade board with a 120MHz Pentium is available for the lower level ProSignia 300 and ProSignia 500. New in software arena is SmartStart 2.40 and Insight Manger 2.60, which has new features that extend its management capabilities.
