Hewlett-Packard has finalised specifications on its challenging colour ink-jet printer with the ugly duckling name of Squirt (CI No 637), given it the altogether swannier name of Paintjet, and it will make its debut on August 2. On sale in the US at $1,295, it will reach European shelves early next year allowing time for adequate software support to be developed in languages other than English. The PaintJet carries two ink-jet heads, one for black ink the other for cyan, magenta and yellow and between them they can create seven primary and 330 secondary colours. It offers text resolution of 196 by 196 dots per inch with colour at 180 by 180 dots per inch. It prints a full A4 size page of graphics in three to four minutes and takes around 40 seconds to do a page of near letter quality text, printing at 167chps. PaintJet uses disposable thermal ink cartridges good for 1,100 pages of text, 180 pages of colour graphics or 160 pages of overhead transparencies. Hewlett-Packard says it runs an open paper strategy where it recommends its own paper for use with the printer but admits that papers from others, such as Canon, work adequately. The only transparencies that prevent smudging are those developed by 3M Scotch but even so single sheets must be used to allow for eight minutes’ ink drying time. Centronics, RS232 and Hewlett Interface Bus ports are provided. Hewlett says the small footprint, 11 lb PaintJet with noise level below 50dB will compete with CalComp Colormaster, Xerox 420, Epsons’ EX800 or LQ2500 and the OkiData 292/293/294.
