Hewlett-Packard Co says its HP OpenView release 3.1 distributed management software for Unix-based systems and HP OpenView for Windows for the development of Windows-based applications is out this month. HP OpenView consists of a portfolio of management applications from Hewlett-Packard and other vendors and a set of services that help reduce network-operation costs. The HP OpenView distributed management system is a distributed network and system-management development environment for Unix systems. It provides programmatic access to SNMP and CMOT services using the consolidated management-application programming interface, CM-API. There is an option to include an Ingres database as the repository for data collected on the network, and Common Management Information Protocol services will be added to the HP OpenView distributed management base in 1992. OpenView for Windows is a software-development environment and tools for creating OpenView-based network-management applications for the Microsoft Windows-based personal computer environment. It is for the development of network-management applications that create a network topology map and for monitoring network events and alarms from a Windows micro.

Sixth release

Formerly OpenView Windows/DOS, this product was first shipped in December 1988 and is now in its sixth release. New features include Windows-based installation, an enhanced menu system and dynamic map updates giving real-time information. There is also an OpenView for Windows developer’s assist programme to support companies developing OpenView for Windows applications. In addition to assistance by phone, fax or electronic-mail, customers get product updates and early releases. Hewlett-Packard’s personal computer software division in Sunnyvale, California has assumed responsibility for the OpenView for Windows development, while the Colorado-based team will focus on the Unix products. The HP OpenView distributed management is $8,000. The OpenView distributed management developer’s kit is $23,000, including a copy of the OpenView distributed management system, Ingres is $5,000. OpenView for Windows developers kit is $2,500, and the OpenView for Windows developer’s assist program is $1,800 per year.
