Hewlett-Packard Co’s subsidiary in the Czech Republic has signed a contract with the Ministry of the Interior to supply the ministry with a computer system to automate the country’s central register of citizens. Account manager Martin Mikula said the company could not give details of the size of the win until it had had a statement cleared by the Czech government. The selection of Hewlett-Packard does, however, seem to sound the death knell for Wyse Technology Inc’s involvement in the project; Wyse won the contract to provide a system in 1991 and its machines are in use in district government offices, but the company is understood to have run into difficulties – not all of its own making – during the implementation stages. Like Wyse, Hewlett-Packard tendered with Informix Software Inc as its database partner (CI No 1,791).
