Plans for closer integration of Hewlett-Packard Co’s HP-UX and Apollo’s Domain Unixalike operating systems will culminate in the release of HP-UX version 8.0, scheduled for the middle of next year. The two will not be formally merged, rather they will converge around the Open Software Foundation’s OSF/1 offering and X/Open’s portability guide. HP-UX version 7.0, which is available from October on the HP9000 Series 300 and 800 machines, adheres to X/Open’s XPG2 requirement and to Posix, and has C2 security clearance. Version 8.0 – to which a free upgrade from previous releases is to be given – will be XPG3-compliant and is expected to receive the higher B1 security rating. In addition, Hewlett says it is designing lifecycle development tools for Motorola’s 68040 processor; it is promising board-level upgrades to the new Motorola chip for users of both its own and Apollo Computer’s 68030-based workstations. The tools are thought to include a real-time, full speed emulation system, a probe interface to logic analysers, a cross C language system, a C and assembly language debugger, and a software test system; no dates.
