HEWLETT-PACKARD UPGRADES ITS PALMTOPS WITH 660LX

By CBR Staff Writer

Hewlett-Packard Co, which has done well in the Windows CE handheld computer market, has launched a new handheld system, the 660LX. HP claims its the first palmtop to include an integrated 56.6Kbps modem. The 660LX uses a 32-bit Hitachi SH-3 RISC chip running at 75MHz, and comes with 32Mb RAM and runs Windows CE 2.0. It will cost $999 when it begins shipping next month. The existing 620LX, introduced last year as the first color palmtop, gets its price reduced to $799. HP unveiled Desktop Management Interface DMI-compliant software tools for the system, extending its TopTools PC manageability software to palmtops. HP claims to have the number one share of the Windows CE handheld market, with a 43% slice according to Dataquest Inc figures.
