HEWLETT-PACKARD UNVEILS “PHOTOREALISTIC” HP9000/835…

By CBR Staff Writer

Hewlett-Packard Co yesterday added the HP9000 Model 835 with TurboSRX, touting it as the fastest workstation on the market today, rendering photorealistic images and three dimensional interactive graphics three to 10 times faster than the company’s SRX subsystems in the 9000 Models 350 and 825. The Model 835 is rated at 14 MIPS and 2.02 double-precision MFLOPS. Hewlett claims that the features of the TurboSRX enable users design objects as fast as a thought occurs, and that they look so realistic as to obviate the need for making models. TurboSRX, also available with the HP9000/350, does 900,000 transformations per second, 240,000 three-dimensional vectors per second, and 50,000 clipped, checked 50-pixel triangles per second. The Model 835 RISC is about UKP60,000 and Hewlett-Packard will start taking orders for it here from April 1.
