If you’re smaller, less well-known and striving to make an impact, you have to try a lot harder, and the new Bloomberg Business News agency has dug out a story the others seem to have missed: Hewlett-Packard Co discloses in a filing with the US Securities & Exchange Commission that it has instituted a cost-cutting programme to remedy the disappointing third quarter performance – it is instructing divisional managers to close plants for about a week at Christmas, use fewer temporary workers, ask employees to take a day off without pay every two weeks, and move employees from slow-growing to fast-growing lines.
