Hewlett-Packard Co and EMC Corp have announced a new disaster tolerance solution based on HP’s MetroCluster for EMC’s Symmetrix Remote Data Facility software. Previously, the solution was campus-based, which meant if an HP mission critical server went down on one site the users would automatically be transferred to a secondary server and EMC storage solution, provided it was within 2 to 3 kilometers of the original site. The announcement extends that failover capability to 40 kilometers, further reducing downtime. Gil Press, EMC’s manager of market and brand positioning, said a ContinentalCluster service would be available by the end of the year.
