HEWLETT OFFERS NETWORKED SCANNER AT $3,000

By CBR Staff Writer

Hewlett-Packard Co is further upping the ante in the multifunction hard copy output device stakes with launch of the ScanJet 4Si multi-user NetWare network scanner that can scan up to 15 pages of documents a minute into personal computers attached to the network. It is the first desktop scanner that hangs off the network rather than a single computer, and it sells for $3,000 with Ethernet, $3,200 with Token Ring. There are two other scanners. The HP ScanJet 4s sheetfeed scanner uses hardware and software from Visioneer Inc and lists for just $430. It fits between the keyboard and printer and captured documents can be dragged and dropped into other applications for further processing and printed out or shipped to other users via facsimile or electronic mail. There is a $1,000 ScanJet 4c colour version.
