Hewlett-Packard Co representatives in Taiwan confirmed that it is considering involvement in yet another vast semiconductor project, this one involving a $2,200m investment in northern Taiwan. The Commercial Times reported that the project will include three semiconductor plants processing 8 wafers. Ke Wen-Chang, chairman of Hewlett’s potential Taiwanese partner WK Technology Fund, said that negotiations have reached the final stage but declined to provide details. The venture, to be based in the Taipei suburb of Linkou, is intended to produce Flash memory chips, static random access memories and logic chips. Other partners in the venture were reported to include Taiwan’s Formosa Chemicals & Fibre Corp, Rohm Co and Rockwell International Corp, but Formosa Chemicals denied that it is considering making any investment in wafer fabrication.
