HEWLETT GOES WITH NEWBRIDGE FOR ASYNC TRANSFER

By CBR Staff Writer

Hewlett-Packard Co has decided that Canadian leader Newbridge Networks Corp still has the edge in Asynchronous Transfer Mode technology and the two yesterday announced plans for a significant strategic marketing and technology alliance. The two plan to create extremely high-speed-networking systems to enable customers to deploy multimedia and office-productivity applications such as video conferencing and Notes, across an office or around the world. The companies plan to co-develop and jointly market high-performance local network equipment using Hewlett’s 100VG-AnyLAN fast Ethernet and Newbridge’s Asynchronous Transfer Mode switches. The two will also work on integrated network management systems and programming interfaces for multimedia applications to run on 100VG-Asynchronous Mode networks. Workgroups that use the 100VG Fast Ethernet standard will be able to connect to campus-wide networks using Newbridge’s Vivid Asynchronous Mode networks via a Vivid VG-to-ATM OC3 155Mbps bridge. A second-generation product under consideration will enable users to place a Newbridge VIVID ATM interface into the expansion slot of the HP AdvanceStack shared-bandwidth or switched-bandwidth 100VG hubs, eliminating the need for a separate Asynchronous Mode bridge. The two will also work on integrated modules for AdvanceStack that enable direct connection to Asynchronous wide area network services as they become available. And the Kanata, Ontario company and Hewlett will work with major network operating systems and application developers to facilitate the development of new multimedia applications to exploit their offering.
