This year’s coveted Breakfast Music Award went to Daryl Denham in the Morning for the Midland’s biggest radio station. It’s the larger-than-life DJ’s first award since he came to Heart fm last August, beating off competition from last year’s Gold winner Kiss FM’s Bam Bam Breakfast, BBC Radio 2’s Terry Wogan and Classic FM’s Henry Kelly.

Some aspects of the breakfast show that may have caught the judges imagination were Daryl’s now infamous spoof songs and fantasy phone calls, including a play on Ronan Keating’s hit ‘Life is a Rollercoaster’, broadcast around the time of the petrol crisis and aptly renamed ‘Life is a Petrol Forecourt!’

Heart fm Programming Director, Alan Carruthers, said, The response from the public since Daryl joined us is absolutely staggering and we are all extremely happy that the breakfast show has secured such a prestigious award. This is all down to the hard work and great efforts of everyone involved.

The results were announced at the Sony Radio Awards 2001, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London last night.
