Hayes Microcomputer Products Inc says it will begin shipping 56K PC-card modems for laptops before the end of March. The modems are based on the K56Flex technology developed by Rockwell Semiconductor Systems Inc and Lucent Technologies Inc. Hayes says the modems have been rigorously tested and deemed fit to ship, even after Rockwell had earlier in the week put back shipments of the K56Flex chip sets due to performance problems. The card modems will be priced at about $209. Hayes has already begun shipping 56K modems for desktops, which are retailing for $179.
